About the Journal

AJME Aim and Scope

The primary goal of AJME is to provide a scholarly platform for sharing research and fostering discussion on judicial, civil, and criminal procedure reforms and their impact on access to justice throughout the Middle East. Our scope is defined by the region’s distinctive legal landscape, which features a dynamic interplay of civil law, common law, and Islamic legal traditions. We welcome scholarly work that examines the region's ongoing modernization efforts and evolving procedural doctrines, offering insights into how different jurisdictions navigate challenges within their unique political and social contexts.

While AJME, like all journals in the "Access to Justice" family, is an English-language publication to ensure a broad international readership, we also recognize the unifying role of the Arabic language across the region. To enhance accessibility for local scholars, all articles will be accompanied by abstracts in Arabic. Furthermore, the journal will publish select articles in Arabic, providing a unique opportunity for researchers to engage with and contribute to the scholarly discourse in their native language.

A key area of interest for the journal is the study of transitional justice in the region's post-conflict societies. We particularly encourage submissions that analyze legal responses to mass human rights violations, mechanisms for truth and reconciliation, institutional reforms, and other efforts to rebuild trust in the rule of law and contribute to sustainable peace.

AJME invites both theoretical and practice-oriented research. We welcome comparative and region-specific studies that offer perspectives from the Middle East and other areas undergoing significant legal transformation, fostering a global dialogue on access to justice.

Editorial Leadership and Board

According to the best practices of the AJ Family of Journals, AJME will establish a distinguished international editorial team. Following the successful model of our flagship journal, AJEE, we will be forming an Editorial Board, an Advisory Board, and teams of Section, Managing, and Language Editors.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Maya Khater will serve as the founding Editor-in-Chief of AJME.

Dr. Khater is an Associate Professor in Public International Law at the College of Law at Abu Dhabi University and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the journal. She holds a Ph.D. from Damascus University and has held academic and leadership positions at several universities, including Al Kalamoon University, Dar Al Uloom University, and Al Yamamah University. Her extensive administrative experience includes roles as a vice dean and assistant dean, demonstrating her strong leadership capabilities.

A highly respected scholar, Dr. Khater has an impressive publication record, including four books and numerous research papers in peer reviewed journals. Her areas of expertise—public international law, human rights, and international criminal law—are perfectly aligned with the journal's scope. As an experienced author, reviewer for legal journals, and qualified science editor, Dr. Khater is exceptionally well-suited to lead AJME to academic excellence.

Under her leadership, we will establish a distinguished international editorial team. Following the successful model of our flagship journal, AJEE, we will be forming an Editorial Board, an Advisory Board, and teams of Section, Managing, and Language Editors. We will soon announce an open call for applications for these positions and invite scholars and practitioners to join us in this exciting new venture.
